How do I know if my CPAP mask is right for me?
Your mask should feel comfortable, fit well, and avoid air leaks or marks on your face.
Signs it might be time for a change:
- You feel discomfort or pain
- You have frequent air leaks
- You sleep poorly or wake up often
- Your mask leaves red marks or irritation
If any of these apply to you, talk to your healthcare professional. They can help you find a model better suited to your facial structure and sleeping habits. You can also visit our online shop and discover a wide range of masks and identify a better CPAP mask option for you.
What’s the difference between full face, nasal and nasal pillows masks?
The design of a CPAP mask affects where the pressurised air is delivered and how the mask sits on your face:
- Full face CPAP masks deliver air to your nose and mouth.
- Nasal CPAP masks deliver air to your nose and do not cover your mouth.
- Nasal pillows CPAP masks have two soft inserts that deliver air directly into your nostrils and do not cover your mouth.
Different mask styles can offer different benefits. For example, a full face mask can be a good option if you breathe through your mouth at night, if you suffer from allergies or if you have a deviated septum or another condition that blocks the passage of air through your nose.
If possible, try on different styles of CPAP mask. Our mask categories make it easier to compare options and find the right style for your sleep habits.

How do I fit my mask?
Each of our masks has a dedicated web page featuring support videos and advice on getting a good fit.
A well-fitting mask will feel comfortable and provide a stable seal so that air does not leak out. If air leaks out of your mask (mask leak) or your mouth (mouth leak), you won’t receive the full benefits of CPAP therapy.
- Fit your mask before connecting the tubing or turning on your therapy device. Follow the fitting steps in the user guide or videos.
- Try not to over-tighten your mask — over-tightening can cause leaks and discomfort.
- Once the mask is positioned, turn the airflow on and make small adjustments as the cushion inflates.
You can also download the myAir app for personalised coaching and tips to help correct mask fit issues. If you're still having trouble, ask your care provider for help.
What causes leaks?
Air leaks can occur for several reasons. See the linked FAQs for help diagnosing and resolving leaks:
- Poor fit or over-tightening — see "How do I fit my mask?"
- Tube drag — see "How can I prevent tube drag?"
- Mask style — see "What’s the difference between full face, nasal and nasal pillows masks?"
- Mask size — see "How do I choose the right cushion size?"
How can I prevent mouth leak?
If air is escaping from your mouth during therapy you may be opening your mouth while you sleep, or your nose may be blocked. Mouth leak can be noisy and leave you with a dry mouth.
Try the myAir app to get alerts and tips when leak thresholds are exceeded. For occasional mouth leak (for example when you have a cold) try a chin strap/chin restraint (see mask accessories). If mouth leak happens often, consider a full-face mask.
We offer full-face masks across our categories (examples: AirFit F40, AirFit F30i, AirFit F20).
Why is my CPAP mask noisy?
All CPAP masks make some noise as exhaled air leaves through the vent. If you hear ‘burping’ sounds, you probably have a leak — check your fit and cushion placement. If noise is vent-related, consider masks with QuietAir™ or quiet-woven mesh venting which gently diffuse exhaled air.
Quiet venting features appear on selected Minimalist, Versatile Fit and Freedom masks (see product pages for details).
How can I prevent tube drag?
Tube drag happens when your tubing pulls on the mask and affects the seal. Lie on your bed and move around to check how the tube behaves. If you need more freedom, consider longer tubing or a tube-up (top-of-head) design like our Freedom masks (AirFit N30i, P30i, F30i, AirTouch N30i).
Which masks are suitable for sensitive skin?
ResMed cushions are usually medical-grade silicone (hypoallergenic). If you don't tolerate silicone, consider AirTouch masks that use breathable memory foam or fabric cushions: AirTouch F20, AirTouch N20, AirTouch N30i. These options are gentler and adapt to your facial contours.
